You may have seen headlines about AI detecting decay in children’s teeth. So, can a scanner really find cavities?
The research is promising - but the dentist still does the thinking.
A Melbourne study found that dentists reviewing 3D scans of children’s teeth reached broadly similar findings to those examining the teeth directly, particularly for more established decay.
The scans create a detailed model that can be enlarged and rotated on a screen. For parents, that means less trying to picture what the dentist is describing - and more seeing it for yourself.
Does it replace a check-up or X-rays?
No. Scans provide useful information, but they don’t show everything.
At Creswick Dental Centre, we already use digital scanning. The value is simple: clearer pictures, clearer explanations and a better understanding of your teeth.
If you’re concerned about your child’s teeth, arrange an examination. We can explain the findings, show you relevant images and discuss the most appropriate next steps.
