Childrens Dentistry
Despite their name, baby teeth are very important as they hold space for adult teeth and help them move into the right position.
Checking your child’s teeth regularly from infancy is a great opportunity to also educate them about healthy eating and teeth-cleaning habits. Naturally, this will go a long way in helping your child maintain good oral health into their adult years and to avoid complex dental treatments in the future.
Your child’s first dental visit
Your child’s first dental visit should take place before their third birthday. We usually keep it short and do no treatment or just a gentle cleaning.
How to prepare your child for his/her first visit
1). Bring them along to your own dental examination so they can sit on your lap, watch what happens and get used to the environment, including the smells and the sounds of instruments and even go for a ride in the dental chair.
2). Speak positively about your own dental experiences and avoid using negative words, such as “hurt”, “pain”, “needle”, “injection”, etc. Kids do not need to hear those words before their visit to the dentist.
What to expect during your child’s dental check-up visits
- Review of your child’s medical and dental history
- Thorough examination of your child’s mouth, teeth, and gums
- Assessment of the bite (how your child’s teeth will come together)
- Highlight the position and amount of plaque and tartar build-up
- Removal of plaque and tartar build-up, if necessary
- Specific advice about home care, including toothbrushing techniques, diet, and use of fluorides
- Advice about your child’s overall oral health including teething, oral habits, and injury prevention
- Guidance on what to expect as your child grows and develops in the coming months and yearsDespite their name, baby teeth are very important as they hold space for adult teeth and help them move into the right position.
