Today, Creswick Dental Centre is sharing the top three habits that can seriously damage your teeth and gums. Ready? Let’s dive in!
1. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush
Using a hard-bristled toothbrush might seem like a good idea to get your teeth extra clean - but it can actually harm your gums and tooth enamel. The tricky part? The damage doesn’t usually cause pain right away. Over time, repeated use can cause the gum line to recede, exposing the sensitive tooth necks and leading to uncomfortable tooth sensitivity.
2. Brushing your teeth immediately after meals
Many people think brushing right after eating is a good habit - but especially after consuming acidic foods and drinks (like citrus fruits, juice, or soda), your enamel temporarily softens. Brushing at this moment can wear away the enamel faster. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating to let your saliva neutralise the acid and give your enamel a chance to recover.
3. Overusing whitening toothpaste
Whitening toothpastes often contain abrasive particles and chemicals that, if used too often, can thin your enamel and irritate your gums. Excessive use can lead to increased tooth sensitivity and even damage your oral tissues. For safe whitening, it’s better to consult your dentist and explore professional options.
